About Todd A. Auker, M.D.
Dr. Auker got his bachelor’s degree from U.C. Santa Barbara as an independent major in Bioethics. He studied at U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Public Health through the Visiting Scholar’s Program. He obtained his medical degree from U.C. San Francisco and completed his internship at Stanford University Medical Center and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. His medical and surgical residency in Ophthalmology was completed at the Bethesda Eye Associates and Saint Louis University.
Dr. Auker practiced general medicine for two years prior to specializing in Ophthalmology. He continues to address each patient’s overall health and is dedicated to remaining a comprehensive physician.
After completing residency, Dr. Auker joined the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, Walnut Creek. During his 10 years at Kaiser as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, he performed many thousands of surgeries. In addition to perfecting his skills as a general ophthalmologist, Dr. Auker also provided specialty services in glaucoma, oculoplastics and laser vision correction surgery for this large department serving all of eastern Alameda and Contra Costa counties. This tremendous surgical volume only refined Dr. Auker’s surgical and diagnostic skills and established his reputation of excellence.
He also served as the Chief of the Laser Safety Committee and as a member of the Hospital Ethics Committee.
Despite working with many excellent colleagues and valuing every patient in his large practice, Dr. Auker ultimately realized that establishing a private practice would allow him more latitude in providing the highest quality of individualized care for each patient.
In 2001, Dr. Auker established the Auker Eye Institute with the mission statement: “We will deliver the highest standard of care while providing the best clinical judgment, surgical skills and quality outcomes available anywhere.”
Dr. Auker is past president of both the East Bay Ophthalmology Society and Kaiser Permanente Northern California Ophthalmology Society. He has served as a representative-at-large for the Board of Directors of the California Association of Ophthalmology. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
In 1988 and 1992, Dr. Auker enjoyed the privilege of serving as the traveling physician for the U.S. Olympic Water Polo Team. Experiencing first hand such commitment to excellence was inspiring, renewing Dr. Auker’s dedication to deliver the highest quality outcomes possible for every single patient. A perfectionist by nature with exceptional fine motor skills, Dr. Auker is well-suited to the task.
Dr.Auker has served on numerous Medical Ethics Committees including that of the Alameda Contra Costa Medical Association and most recently as the Chairman of the Valley Care Medical Center Ethics Committee.
He currently serves as a board member of the Valley Care Charitable Foundation Board of Directors.
Dr. Auker remains involved in medical education hosting and employing both premedical students as well as medical students in clinical externships.
Dr. Auker is a proud father of three young adults doing well in the world. He is blessed with a happy large extended family, and loves all aspects of family life. He enjoys travel and looks forward to volunteer international medicine at a later phase of life.
As a former accomplished gymnast and competitive athlete in multiple disciplines, he now enjoys fitness training while running, biking, swimming as well as an occasional triathlon event. Scuba diving and backcountry skiing are his primary motivations for maintaining his fitness level. Dr. Auker completed the “Death Ride” Tour of the California Alps in 2000, 2008 and 2009. He was also a member of the U.S. Tennis Association National Champion 6.0 Mixed Doubles Tennis Team in 1997.
